Boxers effort to get former Champion a new belt

Dai Dower MBE became the flyweight champion of Britain,Europe and the Empire during the 50's.But he no longer has his most prized memento-his Lonsdale Belt.Boxers get to keep their Lonsdale Belt if they become British champion and defend the title twice. Dai originally from Wales,defended his once but was enlisted to do his National Service.He was told he would be the first challenger when he came out....more...

"Green to Gold"
Posted by Paul Fairweather on 26th Jul 2011The City of London,as part of their Olympic initiative organised a day[6th July] entitled "Green to Gold".Bill Hawkins mentioned to the organiser that Ronnie Cooper had boxed in the 1948 Olympics and suggested they ask him along as a guest of honour. He was duly invited,accompanied by LEBA members Sammy McCarthy and Alan Docker.At a Guidhall reception Ron entertained the "top nobs" with tales of his memories from 1948 including his diet and Olympic photos.They all had a very enjoyable day. London's rich boxing legacy revealed at Hackney exhibition

Wales EBA - Presentation evening
Posted by Paul Fairweather on 26th Feb 2011On Friday 25th February,the Shoreditch Town Hall crew "road show" hit Cardiff.They were there to present the medals to 20 former Welsh boxers,who had boxed at Shoreditch.Around 100/130 people gathered at Rowney Conservative Club in Cardiff for what was to turn out great evening.Nicky Piper arrived only to be asked to present the medals,rather than the "crew".He did this with great pleasure,asking all the boxers when they fought there,who the fought ,results etc,nothing was too much trouble for him,this made the Welsh boys evening....more...

Posted by Paul Fairweather on 26th Feb 2011(2 comments)Back in January,we were contacted by Val McKeeman,manager of Carmichael House Care Home in Dundee ,asking if we could provide her with any more information regarding The Shoreditch Town Hall medals as one of her residents Davy Croll had boxed there.Details were sent along with the dvd,programme of the day and record book.She informed us that the Lord Provost of Dundee was due to present Dave with his medal on January 26th.We have now received the photos of Daveand a letter stating that,"Davy enjoyed his afternoon of noteriety,but seemed perplexed with all the attention"....more...

Boxing world's generous support 2010

The event has been held every year since 1990 in tribute to boxer Gary Davidson,whose life was cut short by MND.Many boxers and people associated with the sport attended the 2010 event,which was held at the Darenth Valley Golf Club,including the guest of honour,Dave Charnley-the Dartford Destroyer....more...

Posted by Paul Fairweather on 1st Nov 2010It has been reported to me by LEBA member John Griffiths,that Cliff Field a former pro heavyweight,passed away on Sunday aged 67.Cliff boxed our own Billy Aird twice also Richard Dunn,but he was better known on the unlicensed circuit beating Lenny McLean twice. Cliff had battled with alcholism for many years and was living in sheltered accommodation,being cared for, as he was very poorly.His book had only just gone to print last week and he was looking forward to seeing to seeing it in print. GARY DAVIDSON ANNUAL GOLF CLASSIC

The tribute this year will be honouring Dave Charnley,arguably one of the greatest pound for pound fighters this country has produced.On this occassion Dave is donating the proceeds to the Motor Neurone Disease Association as a tribute to Gary. Help for Heroes.
Posted by Paul Fairweather on 7th May 2010An evening was held on Thursday 6th May for Help for Heroes Fund at The Kings Head,Sevenoaks.Many people attended the evening including members of both Brighton EBA and London Ex Boxers Association,too many to name individually.Jimmy Batten hosted the night and also provided the entertainment.An auction and raffle were held and raised the terrific sum of over £1000.00.Many thanks to Tommy Mulholland who organized the event,Dave Smith,landlord of The Kings Head and his staff who worked tirelessly thoughout the evening and of course Jimmy Batten and all those who attended the event.
Tom Sayers plaque unveiled

The event took place on 17 April before a crowd that included several generations of Sayers's descendants. The plaque – sculpted by Carl Payne and designed by SEBA president Tommy Mellis – is a fitting tribute to one of boxing's pioneers, and marks the 150th anniversary of his world-title battle with the American John C. Nipper Pat Daly

Alex has very kindly provided us with a number of great images of his grandfather's days as a fighter, and has offered to provide the site with more content in the future. Nipper's profile is on the site and is well worth a look.

Errol Christie's New Book

Errol gave a brief talk and the went on to promote his new book, which sold very well. A pound from every copy sold went to the Help for Heroes Charity. Well done Errol. Exhibition at Hackney Museum

The exhibition will open on 25 January 2011, a launch for invited guests will be held on the evening of 28 January. The exhibition will last three months closing on 30 April 2011. LEBA Meetings

We have over 600 members many of whom attend our monthly meetings regularly. At the meeting former boxers enjoy a social occasion with friends, former opponents and boxing fans. We meet in the William Blake P.H,[was Litten Tree] City Road, London, EC1. Meetings are held on the first Sunday of each month and start at 11am. Annual membership costs £10.
