Saturday 5th November, book launch of "Sammy's Scrap Book", a compilation of the press cuttings etc collated by Boxing Historian Ray Lee. JOHN LLOYD, R.I.P

By MIKE TAUB SAD to relate the passing on the morning of Wednesday, 6th April, of long-time LEBA member John Lloyd at the care home in Cricklewood that had been his home for the past several years. He was 87. John was a valued sub-editor and sports writer for the Daily Express for most of his working life and frequently contributed to Seconds Out. He was nicknamed Welsh Fargo by LEBA president Stephen Powell in deference to his nationality and the fact he would invariably deliver his copy at the very last minute to Stephen’s mother, the late LEBA secretary Mary Powell....more...

Sid and his wife Lilian were married on 1 September 1942 at Devonshire Road Synagogue in Hackney with the reception at Folman’s West Central Rooms, Noel St, W1. Both Sid & Lilian were born in London in 1922. At the time of their marriage, Lilian was a secretary for the Ministry of Food. Sid started work at 14 as a messenger boy for the BBC. He then became a solicitor’s clerk for the firm H.H.Wells & Sons of Paternoster Row & then decided to take up a career as a professional boxer....more...

NICKY GARGANO 1-11-1934 - 03-2016

Posted by Paul Fairweather on 29th Mar 2016Member Alec Johnson has just called to inform me that Nicky Gargano has passed away,our most sincere condolences go out to the family at this sad time. As a boxer, Gargano was regarded as one of the most skilled of all British amateurs in the history of the sport. Former B.B.C. commentator, Harry Carpenter, had said :'You would never see anyone box like that today because there is no-one around to teach what Nicky knew. Such skill, such timing and such defence.' Three times an Amateur Boxing Association champion, Gargano had 197 bouts and won 190, reversing 5 of his losses....more...

Nobby Clarke 8-9-1926-26-2-2016

Nobby was one of lifes characters in more ways than one,his boxing roots go far back,not only as a boxer,but as a trainer and mentor to so many. An avid supporter not only of LEBA but all the EBAs across the country especially Liverpool,a city he clearly loved visiting. I for one will miss him dearly and I know that I am not alone, for he made so many friends across the UK....more...

Walter McGowan MBE 13/10/1942-15/2/2016

Walter McGowan M.B.E. former world flyweight champion passed away last night after a long illnes.Walter had it all,good looks,articulate,witty and had great boxing skills.He will be remembered as an all time Scottish great and an amazing character who had time for everyone.

The highlights of Pat's career were his two thrilling points wins over the future British champion Johnny Frankham,the first over ten rounds at Wembley and the second over twelve at the Royal Albert Hall.Both were Area title fights....more...

Les, was an enthusiatic member of LEBA. He loved the boxing game, and those that took part in it, which shone through in the thousands of photograph's he took at ringside and other boxing events. For many it was always a pleasure to see him at the various boxing shows, and especially at the LEBA meetings. Irving had been bravely fighting cancer for the past few years and recently transferred to a hospice. LEBA, has just received the sad news that our dear member Tommy Barnham Passed away at 5:30 this morning Sunday 26th Jan. Tom was a great fighter, pre and post WW2. He was a true craftsman of the sport, many considered him one of the most skillful boxers of any era. During WW2 he served in the RN and was made a POW in Poland. Whilst incarcerated in a Stalag he arranged boxing sessions and set up contests between teams from other camps , he boxed many exhibitions himself, all in order to keep up morale amongst the other POWs....more...

Joe was a popular member of LEBA, as was his late brother Charlie and his surviving brother Bernie. He was a long term member, whose support for LEBA was immeasurable; he never gave up trying and looking out for LEBA's interests. What a loss to Boxing, he and his family have given a lifetime to the game, in every capacity. Posted by Paul Fairweather on 21st May 2013Some sad news to report. Ted Berry (Bethnal Green), one of Britain's most promising lightweight prospects of the late 1940s, has passed away aged 84. Ted was a tremendously tough and exciting box-fighter who amassed a perfect unbeaten professional record of 19 straight wins (rare in those days), before a detached retina forced him to retire from the game when aged only 20. Being probably the first woman to attend a meeting primarily because of the fact that she was married to Andy Newton, the renowned middleweight who being totally blind, she accompanied to the early meetings as his carer. There are little details available at present, but I'm sure that when things settle down a little Fred's family will allow us to pass them on. "Nosher" was a great character, larger than life in many ways. A great heavyweight boxer in his day, and film stunt man/co-ordinator. He will be sadly missed by us all. LEBA condolences to his family and close friends, our prayers and thoughts are with you at this sad time.

Funeral of Terry Spinks MBE

Posted by Paul Fairweather on 11th May 2012Wednesday the 9th May saw the funeral of Terry Spinks MBE ,held at Canning Town,the area of which Terry was born into.The service attended by several hundred people,not only the boxing fraternity ,but also many local people,who had they lives one way or another touched by Terry. The Cortege was escorted by boys from his old club,West Ham Boys Club.After the service Terry was reunited with his Mother and Father in East London Cemetery.R.I.P Terry,gone ,but not to be forgotten.

Boxers are teaming up to raise £4000 for a new belt after a former champion "suffered in silence" for 50 years. Dai Dower MBE became the flyweight champion of Britain,Europe and the Empire during the 50's.But he no longer has his most prized memento-his Lonsdale Belt.Boxers get to keep their Lonsdale Belt if they become British champion and defend the title twice. Dai originally from Wales,defended his once but was enlisted to do his National Service.He was told he would be the first challenger when he came out....more...

"Green to Gold"

Posted by Paul Fairweather on 26th Jul 2011The City of London,as part of their Olympic initiative organised a day[6th July] entitled "Green to Gold".Bill Hawkins mentioned to the organiser that Ronnie Cooper had boxed in the 1948 Olympics and suggested they ask him along as a guest of honour. He was duly invited,accompanied by LEBA members Sammy McCarthy and Alan Docker.At a Guidhall reception Ron entertained the "top nobs" with tales of his memories from 1948 including his diet and Olympic photos.They all had a very enjoyable day. On Thursday 18th March,the team at LOCOG** preparing the London 2012 boxing competition,visited the Hackney Museum to see the "East End Lives"exhibition.They met with both the museum management and LEBA to explore the possibilities of how the exhibits could be used at Olympic games time.To quote "Hackney museum and LEBA together have brought a fantastic exhibit that really captures the spirit and tradition of amateur boxing.More specifically,it demonstrates the strength of the amateur boxing scene,past and present,in the East End of London"....more...

Wales EBA - Presentation evening

Posted by Paul Fairweather on 26th Feb 2011On Friday 25th February,the Shoreditch Town Hall crew "road show" hit Cardiff.They were there to present the medals to 20 former Welsh boxers,who had boxed at Shoreditch.Around 100/130 people gathered at Rowney Conservative Club in Cardiff for what was to turn out great evening.Nicky Piper arrived only to be asked to present the medals,rather than the "crew".He did this with great pleasure,asking all the boxers when they fought there,who the fought ,results etc,nothing was too much trouble for him,this made the Welsh boys evening....more...

Back in January,we were contacted by Val McKeeman,manager of Carmichael House Care Home in Dundee ,asking if we could provide her with any more information regarding The Shoreditch Town Hall medals as one of her residents Davy Croll had boxed there.Details were sent along with the dvd,programme of the day and record book.She informed us that the Lord Provost of Dundee was due to present Dave with his medal on January 26th.We have now received the photos of Daveand a letter stating that,"Davy enjoyed his afternoon of noteriety,but seemed perplexed with all the attention"....more...

Many thanks to the generosity of all those who attended the Gary Davidson Golf Classic in August,who raised an amazing £5800.00 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association. The event has been held every year since 1990 in tribute to boxer Gary Davidson,whose life was cut short by MND.Many boxers and people associated with the sport attended the 2010 event,which was held at the Darenth Valley Golf Club,including the guest of honour,Dave Charnley-the Dartford Destroyer....more...

On Sunday 5th December we held our meeting ,held to a packed house of 350+ members and their guests.Some of those in attendance,Maurice Hope all the way from Antigua and also celebrating his birthday,Alan Minter,Terry Spinks MBE,James Cook MBE and Slyvester Mittee to name a few.The 2 Stan's [Friend and Claridge]issued next years calendar,thank you Stan's.A replica of the Dave Crowley belt was presented by President Stephen Powell to Maurice Hope. I have great pleasure in announcing that our Annual Awards Dinner is to be held on February 20th 2011 at the Grand Connaught Rooms commencing at 12.00.Despite the event being heavily subsidised by The Sir Henry Cooper Golf Classic event,unfortunately the ticket prices,sanctioned by the Committee have to rise slightly.This is due to increased costs occurred from the Hotel,as they have remained at the same price for many years.The prices now are £15.00 per paid up member and £45.oo per guest....more...

It has been reported to me by LEBA member John Griffiths,that Cliff Field a former pro heavyweight,passed away on Sunday aged 67.Cliff boxed our own Billy Aird twice also Richard Dunn,but he was better known on the unlicensed circuit beating Lenny McLean twice. Cliff had battled with alcholism for many years and was living in sheltered accommodation,being cared for, as he was very poorly.His book had only just gone to print last week and he was looking forward to seeing to seeing it in print. I have been asked by Alan's family to announce the details of his funeral.It is to be held on Friday 8th October at 12.15 in Liverpool Catholic Cathedral[aka Paddy's wig wam],Mount Pleasant,Liverpool,L3 5TQ.Then on to Springwood Crematorium,Garston,Nr Allerton,Liverpool,L25 7 for 2pm [14.00hrs]. Help for Heroes.

Posted by Paul Fairweather on 7th May 2010An evening was held on Thursday 6th May for Help for Heroes Fund at The Kings Head,Sevenoaks.Many people attended the evening including members of both Brighton EBA and London Ex Boxers Association,too many to name individually.Jimmy Batten hosted the night and also provided the entertainment.An auction and raffle were held and raised the terrific sum of over £1000.00.Many thanks to Tommy Mulholland who organized the event,Dave Smith,landlord of The Kings Head and his staff who worked tirelessly thoughout the evening and of course Jimmy Batten and all those who attended the event.

Our friends at SEBA (the Sussex Ex-Boxers' Association) have unveiled a plaque to honour nineteenth-century world heavyweight champion Tom Sayers. The event took place on 17 April before a crowd that included several generations of Sayers's descendants. The plaque – sculpted by Carl Payne and designed by SEBA president Tommy Mellis – is a fitting tribute to one of boxing's pioneers, and marks the 150th anniversary of his world-title battle with the American John C.
